10 of my favorite picture books right now! This was so much harder than I thought! I could go on for days! Thank you to Cathy at Reflect and Refine and Mandy at Enjoy and Embrace Learning for hosting this amazing event! My 10 picture books are ones that I love to read in the library or with my own kids - you know, the ones you read OVER and OVER again! So here we go . . . 1) Chalk by Bill Thomson - If you have never read this, go and get it now! When I finished reading it to 1st graders, they immediately said, "Read it again!" I can't keep it on my shelves. It is a bonus that Bill Thomson is only 20 min. away from us and will be visiting us to celebrate #dotday! 2) The Dot by Peter Reynolds - An invitation to "make your mark and see where it takes you". This book is followed by Ish and Sky Color in a "Creatrilogy". An essential part of our #dotday celebration. 3) Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal - Is it a duck? Is it a rabbit? You decide. This was the 1st book by the author that I read and I just loved it! Any chance we can get to have kids and grownups to look at things in new ways is excellent in my book. 4) Hello! Hello! by Matthew Cordell - In our world of gadgets, this book is a wonderful reminder of the beauty that exists outside. I love that it shows a child taking action to get the rest of her family to notice too! Illustrations are so special! 5) John, Paul, George and Ben by Lane Smith - Laugh out loud funny historical fiction! Humor for kids and grownups alike! I am sure people in my building think I am crazy when I shout the lines from the book, "Underwear! Extra-large underwear!" But the kids love it and the book is never in my library for long. 6) Otis and the tornado by Loren Long - Kids love Otis and how he risks everything in this wonderful book about friendship and loyalty. There are more Otis books to savor too! 7) Pete the Cat and his Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin - This book and its booktrailer even have the most grownup 4th graders singing and dancing! Another series that I can't keep on my shelves, Pete the Cat is just pure fun! 8) Rocket Writes a Story by Tad Hills - Who can resist Rocket? And the little yellow bird? He loves to read and now he wants to write a story, but needs some ideas. Be curious. Be inspired. 9) Roxaboxen by Alice McLerran - All you need is some imagination to go to Roxaboxen. Creating towns with just whatever you have around you: rocks, sticks, boxes - magical. This is a book my kids and I read over and over again. It is a delight, especially with Barbara Cooney's gorgeous illustrations. 10) Skippyjon Jones Lost in Spice by Judy Schachner - Another favorite to read again and again. Kids love to sing along and practice their Spanish! It is also so much fun to imagine what goes on in your closet! Skippito is just fun for all!

World Read Aloud Day 2013 One day simply wasn't enough - this turned into a week-long experience with 22 skypes, at least 16 schools, and 3 authors participating. There was snow, lots of it, which really threw our schedule into a tizzy. But mostly there was fun, great connections, and lots and lots of reading. Sometimes kids read, sometimes adults, and sometimes a combination of it all. The authors, Laurel Snyder, Abby Klein, and Lynn Plourde, were amazing! It is one of my favorite things to connect kids with an author and then see their books disappear from our library. Lynn Plourde even sent us a copy of her newest book, even though it was not quite a book yet. The 2nd graders were beyond excited. I loved connecting with old friends and then making new ones too! New book titles were shared - both print and online versions of books were used! This was truly a mixture of everything that makes learning and the library amazing. I am lucky to be a part of it each and every day! Thank you to all the participants and the teachers and librarians who made this possible! Can't wait til next year! Click HERE for a link to my #WRAD13 movie Spine Poetry Grade 4 students at Korn created Spine Poetry yesterday as we prepared for Poem in Your Pocket Day. Inspired by librarians such as Travis Jonkers, students explored some sample poems and went to work. It was a lot of fun watching them explore interesting titles and use their critical thinking skills to put these poems together. It was also wonderful to see some lesser known titles get checked out because of this project. For the rest of the poems, click here. What fun we have been having! Today was our 2nd week of Read aloud @ Recess! More students keep coming and I love it! Inspired by Mrs. Hembree, a K-6 teacher-librarian from the Seattle, WA area, Korn School began our own read aloud during recess. For 15-20 min. each Thursday, 4th graders come and get comfy with a snack in our glorious sunroom. We read and then I shoo them out to recess (I still believe in fresh air) and then in come the 3rd graders. What have we been reading? Oh what choices there were. I thought about the book that Mrs. Hembree had been reading, Inside Out & Back Again. But I had recently read Frindle by Andrew Clements with my son and knew that this was the one! We have been working hard to talk with students about their "on deck" book or "next read". Many of us have TBR (to be read) piles, but oftentimes, students do not realize how important this is. I thought Andrew Clements, with all of his fantastic books, would be a good choice that could lead to continued reading. A couple of students have told me that they are simply coming for the snacks and I am totally okay with that. Last week we had apple cider donuts from our local orchard, Lyman Orchards - delicious! This week we had brownies! What a pleasure it was to hear all the thank yous and "yums!" from the kids today. Because every time they stay and listen, there is just one more chance that one of them might connect with a book. And that would be the best of all! It has taken me a few days to recover from this amazing conference - Massachusetts State Library Association conference 2012. I was privileged to learn from some of my heroes of education, librarianship, and information literacy. We started on a Sunday morning in early March (after a 3 hour drive to Cape Cod) with Ross J. Todd, professor at Rutgers University. We had lunch with author Tim Green who reminded us of why we do what we do. The afternoon was all Alan November. Monday morning Joyce Valenza inspired me with a keynote followed by a session on curation. Buffy Hamilton and Jarrett Krosoczka, author of The Lunch Lady graphic novel series finished up the day! How amazing!
