Today, 1st & 2nd graders at John Lyman began our journey by reading Lola Schafer's Lifetime. It was fun to challenge them by showing them the cover and asking whether they thought it was a fiction or nonfiction book. We had lots of discussion about photographs vs. illustrations, the cover illustration, the title and subtitle and more.
As we began to read, we created a chart of each animal, its number, and the object (spider, 1, egg sac). For each new animal, the students loved guessing what number came next.
There is so much more to this book, but we were running a little short on time today and we will come back to it next time. I wanted the kids to think about the numbers in their lives. They came up with lots of interesting thoughts. I gave them the sentence starter "In my lifetime, I have had _____ __________."
I always try to have students share their thoughts, so today we used the Skitch app. Skitch is an annotating app which is great for my K-2 students to use. They took a picture of themselves or worked in partners and then added the text. Some of their pictures were pretty funny! Pics are coming soon!
