The Book Basket idea is working wonderfully! Teachers are so excited to see books from the library that are new to them and I am thrilled to have them taking a look at some of the great reads we have here. Not all books are scooped up that day, but I get lots of notes that say, "Remind me of this later this year when we are studying haiku." For those of you wanting to try this, I try to balance titles that go with curricular topics, with some that are just plain great books. I also try to give them a mix of fiction and nonfiction, particularly since Common Core emphasizes that. All in all, it was an idea that really did work. Not much time on my part, but hopefully connects the teachers with the library. Maybe I should add chocolate?

One of the hardest things about being in the library is finding ways to share all the terrific books and projects that are going on in here. Teachers are extremely busy and I wanted to find a way for them to know about what is new. I have tried to email them lists and bibliographies, but I know they look quickly and then forget (I do the same!). The best for me is when I can actually get my hands on the books and look at them. Since I am not able to be at their team meetings due to scheduling conflicts, I have created Book Baskets. Each week I will have 5 or so new books available at their team meeting in a basket for them to peek at. If they want to keep one, I have included a list that they can initial. The teachers seemed excited about trying this out, so we'll see what happens.
We are about to go on break! Yippee! It is sorely needed after all the chaos this fall with Hurricane Irene and the blizzard at Halloween. Peace be with all!
I have been playing with lots of apps and really finding new ways to make MY life easier. I have figured out how to use Google Reader and how GREAT that can be. I am also really loving Scoop.it - I can easily post articles I like to topics I create. Kind of like a magazine that I make myself. Just a minute ago I learned how to share it too! Another high priority is genre-izing (is that a word yet?) my 3/4 library. The kids and teachers loved the idea. It is what they do in their classrooms anyway, so why not in the library? I have read a couple of great posts by others moving in this direction including The Mighty Little Librarian's post Genre Shelving and Julie Hembree's It's a Genre Based Library. We will start stickering here after the holiday break! |
